Did Microsoft know about Xbox failures?
Report casts new light on reliability woes

Has your Xbox 360 ever failed unexpectedly? If it has, you're in good ******* -- in February, warranty ******* SquareTrade pegged the console's failure rate at a shocking 16%. But a stunning new expose claims that Microsoft knew over two-thirds of the consoles produced by its contracted factories in the run-up to the Xbox 360's November 2005 launch date were faulty, and opted to push the machine out to consumers in spite of its problems.

The report, published this week in VentureBeat and written by technology journalist Dean Takahashi -- author of the critically acclaimed The Xbox 360 Uncloaked -- blames numerous factors for the now-infamous "Red Ring of Death" failures, including a rushed design process, the machine's groundbreaking complexity, and cost-cutting initiatives that hamstrung quality assurance tests.

As one anonymous source told Takahashi, "There were so many problems, you didn't know what was wrong. The [test engineers] didn't have enough time to get up and running."

Even though Microsoft eventually extended the Xbox 360's warranty program in an effort to reassure consumers, incurring an estimated $1 billion bill in the process, public confidence in the Xbox 360 was harmed immeasurably. Many online reports indicated purchasers had to go through four or more replacement machines before receiving one that worked, and Microsoft amassed a "bone yard" of 500,000 broken consoles in the process, Takahashi claims.

Only problem I have had with my 360 is when I broke it myself, and Gamestation kindly replaced it free of charge (woot). I also got the pre-owned disc in the machine replaced with a new one (double woot), and as the price of the game had since dropped, I also got £5 back (triple woot).

I got my 360 from a friend for dirt cheap and then got the ring of death like a week later. I just called tech support and bitched until they said that they would fix it or send me another one. No problems since then and that was longer than a year ago. It wasn't even under warrenty.

yeah ive gotten the red ring 4 times in 4 years.
but i also have played my 360 for a long time.

if you take into the account the number of hours mine endured before suffering a red ring, i really am not surprised.

they always fixed it free of charge, even shipping was free, at least they stood by their product.
it was probably the best deal for my money, since i paid 400 dollars for it and have spent at LEAST. 500 hours on it.

(a rough estimate since i had about 100 in call of duty 4 alone)

I dread to think my total 360 hours. I spent 300+ on Oblivion alone.

yeah to be honest,
i probably played gears of war for at least 5 hours a day, for at least 5 months.

cod4 i have around 150 hours,
oblivion i had around 75
gta 4 i had 40
all guitar hero/rock band games i have a total of probably 200 hours.

and thats not including
the hundred other games ive rented
(i have gamefly)
so i play a lot,
but i just got into pc games a lot too

That was all known since day one of its release.. it was pushed forward to gain a stronger hold on the market before the PS3 and Wii hit.. Microsoft needed to boost its share of the market..

They did boost it, but at the expense of console failure due to poor manufacturing and not a complete engineering construction that suited the purpose of the console.. Pretty much the prototype was released before it reached final stage...

Microsoft even said so itself that it pushed it forward to gain more market share.. it just did not say the finer points of what it cost in the long run..

:)

Wii did it as well, but not necessarily with the console, more so with the optional extras. :)

Edit:

Also, I never took after the X-Box. I have one, but I got it for free and have never turned it on. Just sits there. And X-Box 360 I might get in a couple years time..

So many faulty ones on eBay, its hilarious. lol

Well, those new "Jasper" X-Box 360s are apparently the go.

So if your looking at getting an X-Box 360 a couple times from now is to get it [once all the old stock is taken up]

But that is just what I heard.. So not sure how the go is myself.
