What does a rep system do that the current thanks system does not?

The Thanks System is a rep system. it just displays the outcome in a different way. The only thing it lacks is the ability to give negative repuatation. And in an environment which is supposed to be amicable, anything that may cause conflict is a bad idea.

Negative is never a good thing. As MM has said, all it does is cause unnecessary conflict.

and plus, not everyone hits the thanks button when they should.

To be honest, regardless of what "appreciation" system you use, there are those who only take and never show any acknowledgment as to the time and effort a person puts in to help them.

yeah, and sometimes ill do something even when i dont have time or should be doing some thing else just because i know the person truely appreciates it and they are a nice person. but there are a few who just seem so indifferent and ungrateful.

This modification gives the user the option to choose how many reputation points to give or take when posting reputation on a post. They cannot give or take more than the number of points they have available.

When giving rep, aside from choosing if they approve or disapprove of the post and entering a comment, there is a dropdown box going from 0 to the number of rep points they have. This allows them to award or take a lower number of points than the default which uses their point value.

LSD put it so succinctly. Nothing wrong with the thanks system.

With the rep system you describe, there is a negative aspect to it, that is you can take away or give a negative rep/comment.

Take for example, a person could be given a negative rep purely based on the style of music a person contributed in way of a post. That would tarnish the contributor purely based on the preferred taste of the person making the negative rep.

Any rep system that can attribute a negative rep is subjective and should be avoided, let alone the possibility of being abused.

The current system allows for a "thanks" to be attributed to the contributor without the need for any negative connotations.

We encourage people to make posts and in doing so, they should not be subjected to negative overtones, purely based on another persons likes or more particularly - dislikes of an Artist or Movie.

We could have all the members download a script on joining and then if they fail to hit the thanks button, their computer will implode :p

Seriously though, it's only common courtesy to say thanks if you benefited from any post, just because we're all anonymous does not mean we cannot show some appreciation.

i know, but theres a lot of people. and i hate saying this, but the noobs that never say thanks. We should make them take a anti noob training course before joining.

just kidding.

I see a lot of new people come in and join, just to make one request and then disappear.

All sites have these type of members. Nothing will ever change that.

The members who make regular requests usually hit the button as they do appreciate the effort of those helping; and we know there are many sites on the net that you cannot get help without making X amount of posts before being allowed to make a request. We don't want to go down that path. :)
