View Full Version : Aspect of rap music - Longevity

Something I've though about recently. How many artists from back in the day have made music that stands the test of time? Through multi progression and beats. And to be more specific, I'm referencing music prior to the 90's. 80's rap that is still attractive for today’s audience. I'm not talking about nostalgic biases either. I mean, if a person today listened to a Rakim track from the 80's, would it still have appeal?
Also, along the same idea, how many times can you listen to a song or album before it just grows old on you?
Personally, it comes down to the actual music. Lyrics can grow old after repetitive listening, but the flow over the beat and the beats itself has replay value. One thing that I think is missing in today’s rap music.
I’m kinda rambling on, but these are just some things I think about as some one who wants to pursue music production, And above all, as a fan.

krs jus dropped an album thats supposed to be brilliant.......but i aint gonna listen to it
who needs to hear someone go on about how hiphop he is? and how everything he does is right and everything you do is wrong? lol
hes so borin nowdays
the only people from back then i would check for is rakim and BDK....the rest i dont give a shit about tbh
i never get tired of rap songs that i like.....i could play sagas of everyday and find something new in it
^my disdain for modern rap is connected to the previous statement
lyrically, modern rap, doesnt have much replay value....i remember hearin illmatic and every year after that i was still learning new shit from it....rewinding etc.....
now its all put on a plate for you and there is not much depth
i learnt a few things from rappers back in the day.
sampling compared to digital....sampling uses real instruments and thus there are imperfections in those samples....to me also creating replay value.....digital is too fake, sharp i duno......some digital i like...and im likin more digital every day.......im gettin there
what music production do you want to get in to?

When I said music production I was generally referring to anything to do with rap. & I agree with what you said about real instruments over digital. I don't know any one who would disagree with that. Which puts groups like "Roots" in a different class. Even though I'm not a big fan of theirs, the fact that they do their own music makes it that much more original and lasting. I haven't decided whether to follow my friend's route and pursue making instrumentals and beats, or whether to stick to writing and make my way into recording it. And honestly, it doesn't really matter yet, because they both seem like a dream job. I can't think of anything else I'd rather do. So when I was thinking about longevity, it was really more of a day dream scenario, where if I was recording/producing rap music, I'd want to be some one who could stand the test of time, like led zeplin/bob marley/pink floyd from the rock genre.
When I go back and listen to rap music from the 80's, it's either far to primitive as far as lyrics go, Or just to simple and faded when looking at the beats/instrumentals. Good music and lyrics shouldn't be confined to the context of an era it comes from.
Which kinda separates rappers like B.I.G., nas, eminem, and a few others.

one album that definitely has stood the test of time in terms of beats and raps is the beastie boys "paul's boutique". the beats on there still sound fresh as hell today! probably some of the best production i've ever heard on that shit - and that statement stands true even today. check out "car thief", "hey ladies", "egg man" amongst so many others on that LP, if you don't believe that claim!
i know you said not 90's but how about super early 90s? pete rock & cl smooth - mecca and the soul brother springs to mind :) or how about some gangstarr? primo beats still sounds fresh and despite guru's monotone flow he's still a great MC!
@mega, apparently KRS does spit something a little different to his usual condescending nonsense though, on this new album. plus, i'd rather here him rip a mic than most mainstream MCs.

i havent heard the album, i hope it is good though, i really do.......people have been sayin good things so i MAY give it a go
but based on rapreviews review i would definitly pass up on it
""This ain't a diss to nobody's art
Cause Afrika Bambaataa really gave it a start
You go back in the history of rap man
And you'll see classic jams like Planet Rock and Pac Jam
Go online, look up Kraftwerk
Everything we doin is past work!
We already wore that hat, those pants and that shirt
So do you man if that works!!
But we really here to talk about all the copies
Cause when it comes to hip-hop, we the orthodoxy
Cats poorly copy, copy sloppy"
krs one goin on about how hiphop he is, how hiphop use to be better and how everyone else is shit lol
btw they gave it 10/10 LOL....jokes

I'd have to agree some what, but I'm not debating whether or not songs from the 80's stand the test of time for people like US. Because we find a way to see through past trends and into the lyricism and pioneering of original rappers from the 80's and early 90's. I'm more curious about how they would hold up for future generations. Also, that beastie boys album does hold up in my eyes, mainly b/c their style has mostly stayed the same through out most of their albums, while maintaining the same audience through the years, not many people can say that in any genre.

Dunno about standing the test of time, but I still listen to Afrika Bambaataa, Soul Sonic Force, Grand Master Flash, The Sugarhill Gang, Kurtis Blow, Kool Herc.... off the top of my head. How about the Fatback Band from the early 70's? .... and in my opinion, they are all much hotter than a lot of modern crap. :afro:

what flavor?
i think a lot of stuff would be considered to not stand the test of time because of the mainstream audience but that is because of what they listen to. people who like souljah boy are not gonna go listen to some eric b and rakim or some kool g rap and like it. but people who listen to the underground hip hop would be far more likely to like it and probably do. because they are similar, therefore still relevant. the hip hop of then holds up in OUR eyes because we listen to hip hop now. people who listen to pop rap generally dont find hip hop of any era to be good to them, or in the case of older music, to stand the test of time. so IMO people who listen to the hip hop ten years from now, will still find relevance in older hip hop if that is the genre they listen to. ( if they listen to what WE consider hip hop not what it is made out to be)

You just kinda shit on the lack of thought that went into most of my replies in this thread. These pills make me want to type a lot, but apparently there's a few holes in the logic that goes into my replies when I'm tweekin..

@JS the word exists because people like aristotle spent a long time thinking about logic!
syllogism, in case anyone isn't aware is the following logic:
a implies b
b implies c
therefore a implies c
and rudi, that would be a better way of saying it, self-explanatory haha

Syllogism is what happens when people try to justify using the death penalty. :D:D
Rudolf
28th-September-2009, 05:46 AM
a = kill someone
b = getting caught
c = fuck, I got caught
d = must think of an excuse
e = I was (insert any excuse in mitigation of killing some prick)
f = fuck, they didn't fall for my excuse
g = file appeal based on technicality.
h = appealed failed
i = file new appeal based on (insert whatever)
j = appealed failed (fuck)
k = seek out suckers (read: those in support of removing death penalty for guilty pricks)
l = turn deeply religious
m = make mental note, only kill someone in a non capital punishment state or country
n = sit on death row for years, contributing to purchase of nice boat for public lawyer
o = all appeals fail
p = fuck
q = Chose menu for last meal
r = file new appeal based on lack choice on last meal
s = appeal failed
t = fuck
u = prepare for final walk (dead man waking)
v = appeal brand of waking shoes
w = appeal failed
x = fuck
y = kill bastard who makes appeal decision
z = change to different religion and accept fate.
A = Z therefore cut out all the in between crap and fry the bastard. :)
PS. If the executed individual was found innocent due to later forensic evidence that proved the poor prick was nowhere in the vicinity, enact plan B. The greater good has been served. :)
