For about a year now I've been watching almost every grind time battle as soon as the link pops up on my youtube account. But It's really not as mainstream as I thought it was. GT seems to be reserved for hiphop heads on forum sites, and those that are lucky enough to be close to where these battles go down. (At least that's what I understand from talking to a few battlers in it) If you're unfamiliar with Grind Time, than I'll fill you in; It's a mix of freestyle battling and written material. But lately it's been resigned to written with only a few exceptions. (rebuttals, usually 1 bar right after)

The best battlers seem to be from California or Florida, but it's growing. The weaker divisions are the new york and Mid West. Not for lack of talent, but partially because those divisions are just getting started. There's a few originators who've dominated the league, and plenty of people who conformed to the styles but hold it down well enough.

But my question is, what do you guys think about this? The responses I've seen range from "it's not free styling so it sucks" to "It's the best battling out there".

My top 5 favorite would be.. (In order)

1. The Saurus
2. Dumbfounddead
3. Real Deal
4. F.L.O. - Some don't like him, but he's got great multi's and he's ORIGINAL
5. immaculate/Ockwords

That's based on GT battles I've seen. Not just skill. If locksmith battled more, he'd be in the top 5.

Let me know what you think. And I know I've showed many of these battles to my friend Kenshi, who showed me this site. But feel free to respond to... Cause you hardly state your opinion..

I was going to take this topic and try to move it towards an idea. Which would be, the great rap artists of the past 20 years usually have one thing in common; that being rap battles. And with the standard of rap battles being changed, shouldn't that then change the type of artists we'll see in the future, if at all?

it depends if the artists start at rap battles or start writing songs first. if they start writing songs first then it wont change the type of artist
