Is D < E < M < N < O < R < S < Y? Also, is it safe to assume that this is setup as a math problem? If so, is it + - / or *?

Memento Mori

It is a maths problem. You don't need me to tell you the operator though. And your order is also incorrect.

Big!

It has to be + or * unless M is 0.

Memento Mori
18th-November-2007, 02:29 AM
There's only one it can be.

Can't be multiplication, because two 4 digit numbers don't multiply to a five digit number. Can't be division because a 4 digit number divided by a 4 digit number is not a 5 digit number. and xxxx/xxx != xxxx if m is 0.

Also can't be subtraction, therefore it must be addition.

M can't be 0

Memento Mori

Bingo. Now you have to start working out the numbers. The fact that you now know it is an addition should help you.

M has to be 0

Wrong, I'm afraid.

Big!
18th-November-2007, 02:43 AM
Yeah M != 0, E != 0, M must be 1

Memento Mori

M = 1. This is because 9999+9999 = 19998. 9999 is the maximum value of any 4-digit number, and hence 1 is the maximum value a fifth can take if you add two 4-digit numbers together.

SEND => 9567
+
MORE => 1085
=
MONEY => 10652

D=7, Y=2, E=5, N=6, R=8, M=1, S=9, O=0

Took me a minute, but I figured it out.

Congratulations. That is correct.

The N and the E were tricky, until I recognized the carry can never be more than 1.

Big!

Memento Mori
18th-November-2007, 03:22 AM
Yeah. E + 0 != N, so there has to be a carry.

I thought the binary and signed binary addition I do in my Logic Design class was tricky, that's child's play compared to this problem. :)

Didn't bother trying to work it out then?

kaje

basically the M has to be a lower number than S seeing as M is the final product. Thus meaning M will be 1 or 2, and S will be 8 or 9. I will have the solution in a moment.

Woops, didn;t see the second page - edit!

Thus meaning M will be 1 or 2

Although you did indeed get the correct answer, and earlier post of mine explains why M has to be 1, and there is no other even possible option.

I'm on 50 posts per page, so don't have a page 2. But I'm guessing you guys are all referring to Big!'s post with the solution.
