There used to be a tag with them all about the usage of each, but that's not there anymore.
I have a slow upload- and/or download-speed! What can I do?
Our network-connections are far from being full. We always buy more bandwidth than we really need in order to avoid bottle-necks. Neither uploading nor downloading is limited! If you still have a slow upload-speed, try choosing a different network-path for uploading your files. You can choose from three different network-paths in the upload-form. When downloading files, you can select three different download-paths as well. If all paths are slow, the only thing you can do is to call your local provider and complain there.

Rapidshare uses more than one server for a file so they don't get overloaded. These are the server names you can choose to download from.

They gave all these different options so that you could choose one that was the quickest to download.

Today we have integrated two new carriers in our network. Now you can download your files via VSNL and GlobalCrossing as well. We hope that you can download files even faster now. Especially users in countries, where the existing carriers have not the biggest lines will be able to download files much faster than before. Just check out which carrier is the fastest for you. RapidShare is now by far the most flexible and fastest file hoster with the most extensive backbone network world wide.

i dont even look at it.. i leave it as they choose it and download.. i dont see why they offer the choice at all considering they may as well place it on the server that will best do the job at the time for the consumer..

I rarely use the free download service any more. :)
But when I did I always left it on default.

for some reason they changed the server select screen so that you cannot see how much available bandwidth is available anymore - quite strange considering doing this would allow the users to actually do some of the load balancing for them (by choosing the server with the most available bandwidth).
so these days i just set it to randomly pick one (not sure whether that's an option with a free account though) and that usually does a pretty good job rarely do i not max out my connection!
hope that helps

Ditto. If I downloaded constantly every second, I could probably do the 25GB in about 3½ hours.

Yeah, pretty much. I had about 5 simultaneous downloads going at 1500kbps earlier. So thats 7500/s, which would work out as taking just under an hour for 25GB, although practically, I wouldn't be able to keep up those speeds. Normally it's about a third of that, and hence roughly 3 hours.

tombstone, you can go and have your 800/900kbps.
i have a 1.5mbit connection and i still only download at 100 - 150kbps. 180 if I am lucky.
Can someone explain to me why? I want 1.5mbit like i paid for! unless its me not understanding something lol

I am with the same isp, they limit the download and upload speed, the bastards. But rejoice, we received a letter that other day saying at end of this month they are introducing ADSL2 and our speed will be increase for no extra charge, mind you, we will need a compatible modem to get the extra speeds.
This may not be happening in your area, so give them a ring and find out.

Your with Optus as well?
Haha. I'm in Western Australia. I don't know if I received the letter or not, have so much mail to sift through it is not funny hey. What part of Australia are you? Cos if Western Australia then we might get the letter soon. The one thing I saw at the moment quickly was something to do with Direct something with Optus. xD

1.5Mbits is not the same as 1.5MBytes! there are 8 bits in a Byte, so 1500/8 = 187.5kBytes/sec. that's your top speed if it was completely maxed out - but you're unlikely to get that because there is a certain amount of network overhead arranging downloads and stuff and so some bandwidth taken up by that, so your 100-150 is what it should be :)
