View Full Version : Hip Hop dead?

I must admit there is not a lot in the hip hop world that has got me very excited for a while, (although a recommendation to check out Blackalicious was well worth the effort.)
It has seemed a little dead to me, but we spent today cruising around the city with our local Hip Hop radio station on. We usually listen to the local University station which is a bit alternative/grunge biased.
Damn we heard some sweet stuff, most of which I didn't recognise. It's a hardcore station, and doesn't fuck around with station announcements much, so you don't get to know who the hell you are listening to. I'm definitely going to check their website to get their playlists. I want some more o dat stuff man.
Hip Hop is alive and well in the Pacific's Queen City. (That's what we like to call Auckland.) :D:D:D

Exactly, if you have to go by TV or radio, you're missing out on the best music imo. There's so many good artists, you just have to take a chance on downloading music you don't know and go from there. I still get exited by new HipHop every week.
Btw, you checked Alphabet Aerobics by Blackalicious yet? Love that track.

With Auto-tune Hip-Hop is dead. Auto-Tune ruins the rappers/singers actual talent by hiding it with a robotic-sound that puts the person in-tune b/c their singing out-of-tune.

I couldn't find any playlists on their site shifted, but you can have a listen..
http://www.maifm.co.nz/LISTEN/tabid/57/Default.aspx
Mai FM is owned by the local Auckland Maori tribe, Ngati Whatua, my tribe. :D
I've always thought of them as mainstream, but the stuff I heard on Sunday was really good shit.
Having done a bit of research and spoken to my nephew, I figure I heard stuff by DJ Jimmy Jett, a Nigerian dude. Patra, and Roots Manuva, both from the UK who I've heard before, Arthur Mafokate and Zola, South African Kwaito artists, and a lot of local talent, Dei Hamo, Chong Nee, PNC, David Dallas and Mareko to name a few.
You might find the kiwi stuff in WA shifted, but I'm not so sure about the rest of the planet. ;)

Artificial amateurs, aren't at all amazing
Analytically, I assault, animate things
Broken barriers bounded by the bomb beat
Buildings are broken, basically I'm bombarding
Casually create catastrophes, casualties
Cancelling cats got their canopies collapsing
Detonate a dime of dank daily doin dough
Demonstrations, Don Dada on the down low
Eatin other editors with each and every energetic
Epileptic episode, elevated etiquette
Furious fat fabulous fantastic... and so on

Basically the same thing as
Papoose - Alphabetical Slaughter
i think papoose sucks but his song is better than blackalicious'
TombStone
13th-August-2009, 02:09 PM
True, Papoose's is better lyricly but Blackalicious has that crazy flow + beat.
And i agree Papoose sucks, i don't see what people see in him.

i not heard that papoose tune till just now. its not bad, its better lyrically than the blackalicioouse one, but like Tombstone says, the Black flow is better, faster :)

I've been following kenshi's thread about who is lyrically better, Nas or Eminem. Whilst reading I'm listening to Lil Jon, you know? "Get crunk muthafuckah get crunk!!" Maybe I'm just a neanderthal, but nothing makes me feel like leaning out the car window and throwing cowhorns more than those lines. :D

Sweet as homies... :evillaugh:
I'm a real kwaito freak. Basically South African township rap/hiphop/R&B. I lived in the Western Cape province for a little under two years in the nineties, and it blew me away. These dudes are way tougher, and have much harder lives than any of us western pussies, and yet their music, though mean, is full of fun and hope. Fucking cool jokers man.
Mandoza is one of the older guys. I uploaded these two albums a while ago to try and entice y'all into the kwaito magic. I've heard a recent album of his, and he's gone a bit too poppy for me now, but these two albums are him at his rawest.
Nkalakatha and Phunyuku Bamphethe

Pitch Black Afro another of South Africa's kwaito stars, and another cool mumfuckah. He calls his stuff bush hiphop and he's a bloody crackup.

DJ Jimmy Jatt
A big time Nigerian DJ released this album as a kind of West African Hiphop allstars party album. A good intro to West African rap.

I didn't upload this, but I've downloaded it and I like it a lot. Both silas and schlossie have put it up. He's obviously Somali, but I don't know if he's based there or not. His CD cover has a very Western look about it, but his sound is Afrika all da way...

I got shitloads of African music, not just Hiphop. I've put some of it up, and got plenty of hits on them. The continent is a gold mine of choice sounds man. Really...

...... btw you ever listened to bliss n eso cacteur? I've got the deluxe release of their '06 album "Day Of The Dog." Not a big fan. I like Hilltop Hoods but generally I find Aussie hiphop a bit generic for the most part. They do hard rock like they own it, but when it comes to hiphop their best are expat New Zealanders. We got da Island flava down man...:afro:
and shifted if someone doesnt beat me to it, ill get you those links
I'm downloading Non Phixion and Necro right now. I'll stick 'em in me iPod a give 'em an ear soak. I do like metal/hiphop fusion, so Necro sounds like me.

You drunk prick! :lmao: Those bloody herrings will come back to haunt ya bro. One night a few years back now, I was stoned and drunk and started making toast with melted cheese. The missus had had some icecream and had left the chocolate sauce out. I decided to pour some on my cheese and toast. It was fucking awesome, so I stayed up for hours gorging myself on chocolate sauce soaked toasted cheese sarnies. I had some real strange looking chunder the next morning. :o

my friend, whilst highly inebriated and high as a motherfuckere, once thought he'd struck gold by concluding that pouring orangade on bread would be equivalent in taste to a jaffa cake... needless to say, it wasn't. it was disgusting and he later felt like a fool haha
