.. Bluegrass, Southern Rock, whatever.... of the 140,000 members on AW I can't be the only one surely. I've noticed a few requests for straight country lately and was wondering if we should ask Rudi for a Country section. I could probably fill the bloody thing with uploads if I pull my finger out, but is there a call for it here?

Here's some of what I could share..

Trad:
George Jones
Waylon Jennings
Brookes & Dunn
Chet Atkins
Clint Black
Dixie Chicks
Dolly
Emmylou
Jerry Jeff Walker
Johnny Cash
Leanne Rimes
Lucinda Williams
Randy Travis
Rascal Flatts
Reba McEntire
Ricky Van Shelton
Tanya Tucker
Travis Tritt
The Judds
Trisha Yearwood
Stompin' Tom Connors
Sweethearts Of The Rodeo etc..

Country and Southern Rock, Pop:
Commander Cody & The Lost Planet Airmen
Blackhawk
Bonnie Raitt
Creedence Clearwater
Dwight Yoakam
Edgar & Johnny Winter
George Thorogood & The Destroyers
Georgia Satellites
J J Cale? (Well... kind off)
John Anderson
Kentucky Headhunters
Les Dudeck
S t e v e Earle
Yayhoos

Alt. Cow Punk, Hellbilly:
Ass Jack
Alison Krauss
David Rawlings
Gillian Welch
Gram Parsons
Hank Williams III
Johnny Dowd
k.d. lang
Mary Gauthier
Primus
Robbie Fulks
Supersucker
Texas Rubies
The Meat Purveyors
Waco Brothers

This is pretty much a run down of what's in my iTunes folder, and easy to upload. I've got a fair bit more on CD.

What do people think? Anyone interested in my stuff? Anyone else got c**trah to share? Do we need a Country section? Is it worth harassing Rudi for one?

We probably should have one, it is the most popular genre of music (In the US anyways). I like some country, more of the stuff from the '90s though since that is when I grew up. But I have a soft spot for a lot of the old country and southern rock also, I mean I DO live in Tennessee, lol.

Edit: BTW, I like probably around half of the artists you mentioned.

yah that's true...
well, hell-half the country music being played now is just pop music with a steel guitar interlaced, so i guess we might need two new genres...country and "modern" country :D

I always hated country. When Joe Walsh came to New Zealand in the seventies I rushed out to get a ticket, then, when I discovered he was coming with the Eagles I tore it up outside the ticket office because they wouldn't give me a refund. The Doobies, Grateful Dead, couldn't friggin' stand them, all country hicks as far as I was concerned.

Country music has always been popular amongst Maori in New Zealand, and even on my day, more Maori listened to George Thorogood than MoTown. I saw it as that evil white mans music.. (well y'know... youth and all that..;))

Then I met my darling, born and bred listening to George and Tammy. I seriously contemplated getting two stereos for a while in case I somehow wrecked my machine putting country on it. But then... well...

First I got into them old outlaws and honky tonks, Hank, Merle, George, Waylon, Johnny etc. Couldn't believe what I'd been ignoring for so long. Soon I hooked into the women, then the young dudes, S t e v e Earle, Dwight Yoakam etc...

And that eventually led me into the whole alt country scene. The whole connection between celtic music, punk and country, some awesome stuff coming out of that area. Gillian Welch, Hank III, The Wacos, even Robert Plant has finally clicked...

Most of my old rocker mates wont have a bar of it, but, if I play stuff and don't tell them it's country, they love it. When S t e v e Earle played his concert here in Auckland, he dedicated a song to all those Nashville stooges who accused him of selling out to rock. It was the Stones "Dead Flowers" Magic moment.

I hate Nashville, and what they've done to country music, and much mainstream country, but the genre is way more that them these days, heaps more. From the celtic folk of Gillian Welch, to the goth flavoured Handsome Family, Hank III's hellbilly metal thrash to Alison Krauss' sweet warblings, the reinterpreted bluegrass of Devil In A Woodpile, there is way too much, really cutting edge new stuff there to just write off altogether. I'll try and get as much of the good shit up as I can... http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq122/Cacteur/Smilies/8tdq3xkuqvbb75us7d.gif

Where at in TN mabry????

On another note, I hate what you guys are calling "new country". Like someone said it is basically just pop/rock music with a redneck accent on top. Not a fan.

Cow Punk, that name makes me wanna listen.

Think about it.. Take a country band, strip it of all that Nashville over production bullshit, put 'em on a verandah somewhere in the hills, and get 'em pissed and let 'em play as fast as they want... yee fucken haaa!!!

Hardcore metal type cow punk, try this..

http://albumwash.com/forum/t15116-hank-williams-iii-damn-right-rebel-proud-2008.html

Hank III loves his Granpas music and hates his Dad's almost as much as he hates Nashville. Cool dude..

For a slightly more mellow punk... do you remember the Mekons?, Jesus Jones?... the Waco Brothers are pretty much what's left of them...

Garth Brooks and all that crap? I guess you could call it country but I wont be uploading any of it...

However... I've got plenty of what I would call 'real modern country'... Mainstream country has always treated roots country like shit until they start making money, then they are all over them like a rash. From Hank Williams Sr, Merle Haggard, through the Outlaw years of Johnny Cash, Waylon, George and Willy, even S t e v e Earle, they all got shat on by the big wigs at the Grand Ol' Opry until they started making cash.

Nothing's changed. The good shit is still out there, just don't focus on Nashville. http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq122/Cacteur/Smilies/rock-1.gif

Reggae, Reggaeton, Raggamuffin, Ska, Calypso, yeah mon.. I'd be into that. I only started this thread to gauge interest in Country and before ya know it... Rudi had done it.

Just ask him. I don't think it's too much hassle for him to instigate. I got heaps I could upload to a Reggae section too mate... http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq122/Cacteur/Smilies/63adeblazed.gif Sprankcious mon!

Now, I like my fare share of country. I have several country albums I can up from some of these artists:
Big & Rich
Toby Keith
Kenny Chesney
Tim McGraw
Southern Culture On The Skids
Alan Jackson
Carrie Underwood
Faith Hill
Dixie Chicks
Aaron Tippin
Alabama
Andy Griggs
Brad Paisley
Dierks Bentley
Montgomery Gentry
Jake Owen
Jamie Johnson
Johnny Cash
Keith Urban
Travis Tritt
Trace Adkins
just to name a few....now I was not into country in no shape or form, until I got married and I heard Montgomery Gentry and Toby Keith for the first time and I was hooked. Montgomery Gentry has more of a rock edge and I guess that is why I like them.

Start uploading jacjas-7. It's quite funny really. My country music uploads attract no comment, and very few thanks button hits, but they are being downloaded big time. My Waylon Jennings "Sweet Mother Texas" link attracted 87 downloads in the first few days I had it up.

I'm like you too jacjas. I hated country pretty much my whole life, until I met my darling, which was actually a few years ago, so now I'm an expert.

I'd also add, that in my opinion, country, or more correctly, alt. country is the only genre that's doing anything new these days. Hiphop, metal, rock, pop,.... same old same old everywhere you look. :invis: But there is some really exciting stuff going on in the alt. country scene.

I have been posting away on the country music. Plan on next week bringing in a whole new batch of stuff to enjoy and maybe I'll finally finish all the Alan Jackson I have.
