The best way I could get a list is to inspect my last.fm - however musical taste for me, at least, is ever evolving at what I listen a lot to now may be different in 6 months time.

So I suppose I could always list albums that no matter where my musical taste is sitting at the time, I have a soft spot for, and will listen to for the album's own sake, and not for the style or genre of music contained within. I can think of a couple from the top of my head, but there could be more.

The Killers - Hot Fuss

An album from 2005 (I believe) which was a good year for this sort of music, at least for me, my focus had shifted away from indie rock by the end of 2006. While I don't really ever listen to (or obtain) any music of the genre any more (aside from maybe the odd song), even now I can listen to this album from back to front and enjoy it. I don't listen to it all that often though, as it is almost a lost island, isolated from most of my other music preferences.

Soilwork - Stabbing The Drama

An album that did a lot to harness my taste for metal music as a whole, rather than leave it as an afterthought, I'll always have a thing for this album. Discovered purely by accident (downloaded Soilwork discography, as well as the Soil I was looking for, and the track Distance came up on shuffle, and I was hooked), the album sits proudly atop my last.fm album list (aside from an FF OST, but that doesn't count). Partly through over-listening maybe, and a desire to expand my music base, I haven't listened to much of the band recently. However, it always seems to be this album I come back to when I do.

Nightwish - Dark Passion Play

I can't believe how much I put this on when I first got ahold of it. After the departure of the iconic vocals of Tarja, I was unsure what to expect. Nightwish had been just about my favourite band (if you could call it that) since I obtained Once in the summer of 2005 - another random purchase, inspired by a one paragraph review and enjoying another female fronted band, Lacuna Coil. Anyway, with such an identifying sound, I was slightly worried that the new vocalist, and new album just wouldn't be Nightwish. However, will such thoughts on my mind, my first after hearing the album was 'that's still Nightwish'. I'm yet to hear Anette cover the old material yet though.

Nickelback - All The Right Reasons

A band that gets a lot of stick, I think they are a little underrated by some. By their own admission, some are blinded by radio friendly tracks such as the universally known How You Remind Me from Silver Side Up, delve a little deeper here to find raucous tracks such as Animals, and the aggressively emotional tribute to Dimebag, Side Of A Bullet. However, tracks such as Photograph, Far Away, and If Everyone Cared are not unpleasant on the ear, even if they stick of the stench of today's mainstream music industry. However, in Rockstar, while it does still play up to the mainstream, it is a damn fine song.

Dream Theater

- Images And Words
- Metropolis Pt 2 : Scenes From A Memory
- Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
- Octavarium

A favourite band of close friends of mine, I would not know of this band were it not for them. Octavarium being the first I listened to, my library quickly expanded to cover all of their studio material, and several live albums as well. While Octavarium is a fine cover-to-cover album in its own right, almost every single track is strong enough to listen to on it's own. Metropolis pt 2 I have talked about here before. A concept album, it's a great listen all the way through, but a couple of the sections really are very good indeed in their own right.

Others

There are other albums that I will add to this list, but I would have to think about it.

O.K. Here's what we did. I had some friends over on Saturday night and was talking about this, and it turned into a big party game. There were 19 of us, and together we made an attempt to take nicodagift's question seriously and pick the Top Ten Albums of all time, disregarding our tastes and just picking the "best".

We decided that "best" did not necessarily mean biggest selling/ most popular, but that we had to take that into account. We also selected albums that signalled a major new musical path or genre, or had some major impact on the musical world.

We started off with about 120 bloody albums, and spent most of the night arguing over cutting them down. We are all in our late thirties to mid fifties, so, (much to my disgust) decided to stick to albums, 1965 to 1985. By the end of the night we only had it down to 33.

Since them, the missus and I have managed to cut it down to twenty. I don't think we can get it down to ten, so here it is, in chronological order.

Jimi Hendrix - Smash Hits 1968
Beatles - Abby Road 1969
Black Sabbath - Paranoid 1970
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers 1971
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (aka IV) 1971
David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars 1972
Elton John - Yellow Brick Road 1973
Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon 1973
Abba - Arrival 1976
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Exodus 1977
Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks 1977
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours 1977
VA - Saturday Night Fever OST 1977
ACDC - Back In Black 1980
U2 - Boy 1980
Michael Jackson - Thriller 1982
Madonna - Like A Virgin 1984
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA 1984
Run DMC - Run DMC 1984
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms 1985

There were 11 blokes and eight women. We range in age from 38 to 56, so we are mostly old hippy/punks. All kiwis of differing ethnicitys plus 2 Poms (English), an Aussie born South African and a Canadian... and remember, we weren't going for our favourites, we tried to honestly pick the "Top" ones. Waddya reckon? :afro:

PS. Wasn't 1977 a killer year???

My list isn't necessarily the best albums of all time, but probably the ones that have influenced me the most.

Go It Alone - Vancouver Gold
The band that shaped me most as a person, easily. Reminds me of all the times I lived growing up in Vancouver and BC, and returning home to see family, friends, and watch this band play.

Minor Threat - Complete Discography
A no brainer, really. Super empowering, as drinking, drugs etc. just lead to self loathing and unhappiness. This band made me want to play harder and skate faster haha. The discography starts with Filler. I'm listening to it and loving it. It gets to the chorus. If anyone who knows this song.....when Ian says "you call it religion.." and his voice goes up just a bit on the "i" of religion and back down for "gion"? That's when it all changed.

Big L - Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous
I was a skidded out skater kid growing up. I was a soldier in the great war between homies and skaters that took place back then and music lines were drawn in the sand. I liked metal and punk and I HATED RAP. Interestingly enough this is the era when the skateboarding world also embraced rap here. I felt like skaters who listened to rap were traitors until I heard this album.

Bad Brains - Bad Brains
Another given. Disregarding all the homophobic fuckery this band has perpetuated...just a really important band for anyone who even remotely likes punk.

Cro Mags - Age of Quarrel
Don't even try to tell me this album is anything short of amazing. All I have to say about that.

Red Sparowes - At the Soundless Dawn
Whenever I am feeling down, this is the band I usually listen to. It always reminds me of nature. Commonly listened to when I go for a bike ride, or walks. So lots.

Lifetime - Jerseys Best Dancers
I kept hearing this band name dropped in interviews with bands I liked so I ordered this album. The first time I heard it I thought he had kind of a weird voice, but the music was catchy so I bought it anyway. Then I listened to it about 20 times in a row. It was better each time, the lyrics, the music, the sound, everything. Perfect, a little ugly maybe, but to me it was perfect. It took a couple listens, but I'm glad I didn't write it off. I think this was also a record that I heard in a point in my life that it was very relevant and I just needed to hear it then, because it might not have struck such a chord with me.

Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning
This could've gone to other 90's bands... Strife maybe, Strain, Botch? But Snapcase makes the list for a few reasons. 1. Along with Trial this was a band which introduced me and eased me into more progressive and political ideas found in punk hardcore and beyond. 2. This record has stood the test of time, I still listen to it often today. 3. Everytime I put this record on I still remember the giddy feeling it gave me the first time I heard it. I wish I was still moved by music the way this moved me back in the day.

Propagandhi - Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes
The first time I heard this I could not even come close to understanding what the hell was going on. I tried reading the lyrics and didn't really understand them, all I knew is that this was loud, fast and beyond furious. This is also one of those rare records that sounds better with every listen. It took me a few years to actually appreciate the message this band was trying to convey, but that is part of the reason it's on this list. I still haven't heard anything that sounds like this.

Saw it posted and I need to include it:
The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead
I always enjoyed The Smiths and Moz stuff when I'd heard it, but was too "punk" to actually enjoy it beyond hearing it around. This record represents getting over myself enough to enjoy other music as much as I enjoyed hardcore.

i made an album, called it single handed, had about 13 dancey tunes on it, took it round an ex's house, left it there... and then the computer it was on broke so the tunes r lost in time and forever
