I downloaded a .rar file that contained 2 files. One was a password protected .rar, the other was a text file...
Get your password in 30 Seconds & Qualify for AlbumWash Giveaway
First goto http://www.defonic.org
Then enter in your ZIP code and hit submit
The password for the album will be the first word in ORANGE at the top of the following page.
You will be taken to the password page after submitting your vote! Enjoy! - AlbumWash
Is this legit? In the past, the passwords were on the same page as the link to d/l the album.

when requesting a password to a file please post the link that you have downloaded as well as the artist name and album name.
the password for the RAR file that you have described in your original post should be as follows:
Congratulations
please post back and let us know if that worked or not.

Neither password worked...the one you gave me Schloss allowed me to see the contents of the .rar, but not extract it. I'm just going to delete it...waste of time.
However my post wasn't intended to request a password, but to determine the legitimacy of the means to obtain the password. This isn't the first file I've downloaded that's contained the aforementioned text file.
Just seems odd to me to. Since it had "AlbumWash Giveaway" in the text, I was curious if this is a common practice for obtaining passwords.

no it's not a common practice for obtaining passwords. all of the RAR files that contain the "Password.txt" inside of them are scams just about 100% of the time. there usually isn't a working password for them or you have to sign up for a bunch of bullshit just to get them. whatever album it was that you were trying to get, just request it in the music reuqests section of the forum here and i can guarantee that it will be found.

With that said, should uploaded files that contain the password.txt be reported as fake/deleted? Files such as that only detract from the website IMO.

We cannot download and view every contribution made to the main download site. Just because it says "AlbumWash Giveaway" in some text file, does not mean that we sanction or have approved the use of the sites name for this purpose.
The only way we can remove these types of posts is when a member such as yourself brings it to our attention.
Not only is the offending post removed, but I also delete every other post that person has made and then I ban the IP and remove the members name.
I cannot see much else we can do.
It is a shame that people do this type of thing, but that's life.
This is why we need the information:
Download Link and Artist Name and Album Name, and the name of the person who made the contribution.
Without it, I cannot identify the individual who posted the offending post. Don't forget, we could have many copies of the same album uploaded via different download links.
Hence the reason why this was stickied.

Now that I know the "password.txt" file isn't common practice and what to do about it, I'll report "fakes" when I come across them. It'd be nice if there was a
Report As Fake button/link the page of a bad file...not sure if that's possible, but something to think about.
Not trying to step on toes, just hate douche's that have ulterior motives than "sharing" music...well, I hate douche's in general. Yet another example of douche bags committing unwanted acts of douche-baggery. :devil2:

theweedking and his 52 scam albums have been removed from the download site. His ip has been banned and his name removed.
If theweedking thinks that he has been hard done by, then he is more than welcome to lodge a complaint with our "who gives a shit" department :)

I've just been having some fun on the download site removing all their hard work
Poor pets  as we now chase down spamers on the forum, there is now nowhere to hide on the download site.
It takes them more effort to post, than it does for me to remove them. :)
